IndiaNewsNetwork.IN Bureau | 27th Sept 2015: The recent case of moral policing at Madh, where couples were harassed and fined, took place due to the orders given by Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Deshmane, according to a Mid-Day report.
Now a new, startling fact has come to light. It seems a powerful politician from Malwani was behind the raids and had on several occasions complained to Deshmane to raid the hotels and cottages. While IndiaNewsNetwork.IN has restrained from mentioning the name of the “powerful politician from Malwani” sources said that the same politician had ‘warned’ Deshmane that if raids were not conducted and those carrying on illegal business of prostitution were not hauled up, he would complain to the then Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. Incidentally, after a hue and cry was raised and a PIL found its way into the Bombay High Court, Maria himself accepted that moral policing was not a good idea and chastised the cops for their ruthless act. He also ordered an inquiry into the incident. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the couples who were hauled up to the police station are still being harassed by the police to come and record their statements.
In fact, according to Mid-Day, when the incident came to light, the DCP staff along with the Malwani police were pulled up, and the inquiry of the case was given to Addl. Commissioner of Police Fateh Singh Patil by Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, who accepted that moral policing was not a good idea. It was Deshmane who had ordered the hotels and guesthouses to be raided in the Madh and Aksa area. When mid-day broke the story, the DCP and police claimed that the couples had not been picked up from the hotels. But when CCTV footage of the various hotels where the moral police had ventured into, was aired, the commissioner came forward and ordered Fateh Singh Patil to set up an inquiry.
According to a source in the police department, DCP Vikram Deshmane had ordered the Malwani raids, and the Addl. CP Fateh Singh was made the fall guy. “The raid was criticized by most Indians on social media. After the incident came to light, the image of the police was down and dusted. Everyone knows who is behind the raid, but still Fateh Singh has become the victim of politicians,” Mid-Day alleged. Sources say that Fateh Singh Patil has been penalized for an activity carried out by DCP Deshmane. But, it seems DCP Deshmane was only acting on orders from his political bosses who has vested interests in the case.
An IndiaNewsNetwork.IN investigation has revealed that a few poor girls from a minority community residing in the Malwani area were being ‘forced’ or ‘coerced’ by pimps to work as ‘sex workers in the Madh-Aksa area. They were being constanly harassed, stalked and followed. While the backgrounds of these girls seem to dubious as most of them are former bar girls, their families do not want them to go back into the flesh trade.
Social activists from the Malwani area had also approached the ‘politician’ with their complaints, stating that commercial sex workers operating in the Madh-Aksa area, had started renting out rooms for residential purposes in Sector 8, making the area unsafe for women. Their families approached the ‘politician’ on several occasions, who finally gave DCP Deshmane a dressing down on the phone and told him in no uncertain terms that he would file a written complaint with the police commissioner if strict action was not taken against the pimps and erring cottages and hotels. Deshmane in turn vent his anger on the local police station and beat marshals who went into over drive and picked up everyone found in the cottage and hotel rooms.
